Kushinagar is a town in U.P. state of India 52 km away from Gorakhpur. It is the place of historical importance for Buddhist pilgrimage. NH 28 passes through the city. Lord Buddha delivered his last sermon in Kushinagar. Followers of Buddhism visit this place at least once in their lifetime.
The history of Kushinagar can be traced from pre- Buddha period. The place was also known as Kushinara or Kushawati, once the reign of Malla Kingdom. It was one of the Mahajanpad in 6th century B.C. According to legends, it was named after Lord Rama’s son Kush while according to some it is the abundance of Kush grass that led to its unique name.
Kushinagar has witnessed great ancient history and culture. It is believed to be an important centre for Vaishnav, Shiv, Shaktipeeth, Buddha Mahavir etc. situated on the bank of river Gandak and near to the terai of the Himalaya. The significance of this region is also due to being “Link – route” of ancient highways. Since, the place carry religious value for both Hindu and Buddha; people are very religious and traditional in nature.
Mahaparinirvana Temple: This temple stands on the same plinth as the main Nirvana Stupa behind it. The reclining Nirvana statue of Lord Buddha inside the temple is 6.0 metres long and is made of monolith red – sandstone.
Nirvana Chaitya: This is located behind the main Parinirvana Temple. It was excavated by Carlleyle in the year 1876.
Ramabhar Stupa: The stupa is also called Mukutbandhan – Chaitya, is the creamation place of Buddha. This site is 1.5 km east of the Nirvana Temple on the Kushinagar – Deoria Road.
Wat Thai Temple: This is a temple built by disciples of Lord Buddha from Thailand. It was built to celebrate the golden jubilee of king Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne of his country.
Indo-Japan Srilanka Temple: This is a temple built in cooperation of India, Japan and China. It shows the cooperation of three countries.
