About Gangtok Tourism

Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim. It is very popular hill station among tourist. Tibetan, Butia and Nepalese are citizen found around city. History of Gangtok

Gangtok was a free state apart from India. The population over here is of mostly Buddhist Race, it is also a Buddhist Pilgrimage centre. It was ruled by Chogyal as a free state until it was annexed to India. In 1975 People of the state voted for India and state was handled to the government as 22nd  state with capital Gangtok.

Culture of Gangtok

The majority of the population is Lepcha, Bhutia and Tibetan. Apart from major known festivals some local festivals like losar, maghesankranti, drupka teshi are celebrated by locals. Momo is the most popular eatery over here. People are extreme lover of music. They prefer hindipop, nepalirock and western too.

Nathu La: It is a mountain pass that connects Indian State of Sikkim with China’s Tibet Autonomous region.

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology: This is a Tibet museum in Gangtok with Buddhist collection.

Rumtek Monastery: This is also called Dharmachakra centre , is a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery.

Khecheopalri Lake: iginally known as Kha- Chot- Palri lake is sacred both for Hindus and Buddhist.

Foods and Shopping guide of Gangtok

Sikkimese food is a mix of Indian, Nepalese and Tibetan. Some famous local delicacies are ningro, shishnu, churpi and momo is widely available over the city.

Lal bazaar is famous for shopping. You can also enjoy shopping at M.G. Road. You can buy some thankas, silk paintings, prayer wheels, Tibetan jeweler as souvenir.

How to reach Gangtok

By Road:- National Highway 31A links to Gangtok to Siliguri with a length of 114 km. Buses connect to Darjeeling and kalimpong.

By Train:- The nearest station is jalpaiguri 124 km from Gangtok. Train connect to all over India from Jalpaiguri.

By Air:- The closest airport is Bagdogra Airport 16 km from Siliguri. Pakyong Airport under construction is expected to be completed by 2013.

Travelling in Gangtok

Auto-rickshaw and Cycle-Rickshaw:- These are best medium to get anywhere in city. But fares should be fixed in advance.

Taxi:-One can hire an taxi for whole day. It can be booked by call and internet both.

Carry Passport Inc. Visa, Cash Card, Credit Card, Health Insurance Card if any, Vaccination Booklet, Program Booklet, Important Phone Numbers and Extra Passport Copy.
Carry your sun cream, hand sanitizers, soap/shampoo, personal medicines and ant diarrheal medicines.
