Auli is the most popular skiing toursit destination in the uttaranchal state Auli is situated in Chamoli district of the uttaranchal 16 km from Joshimath.The 3 km . long ski slope ranging from ad height of 2519mts to 3049mts is a major attraction.There is a 500 mts . long ski-lift which carries ski-lift which carries skiiers back to the slope top.The best season is from last week of Dec.to March.The slopes of Auli provide enogh thrills to professional skiers and novice as well.
In the 8th century AD, the great Guru Adi Shankaracharya built the famous temple which is still exist in Joshimath . For hundreds of years, the colorful semi-nomadic tribes of the Bhotiyas, of the Mongolian stock, traversed the trails at Auli, locally called Thatauli. Their longhaired yaks, laden with an assortment of goods, assisted them in conducting a flourishing trade with nearby Tibet.
Before Auli was developed as a ski resort, its slopes were the training ground for men of valor and courage-the ski-equipped men of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force. Among the awesome, legendary peaks ranged round Auli, the 23,490-feet-high Trishul (literal meaning, the strident of Lord Shiva) was the scene of a unique expedition in 1958. The mountaineers took four days to climb the peak and only 90 minutes to ski down to the base camp.
Hemkund or the ‘Snow Lake’ nestles at a height of 4329 m. amidst seven snow covered mountains, which are collectively called Hemkund Parvat .The sacred star shaped Grudwara near the lake is one of the most important Sikh Pilgrimage Centres .it is believed that Guru Govind Singh ji, the Tenth Sikh Guru medicated here.Saints like Rishi Medhasa of the Markandeya purana and Lakshman, the brother of lord Ram also performed penance here. A temple dedicated to lakshman is located near the Gurudwara .The 15 kms trek from Govind ghat to Hemkund is very popular .The best time to come here is from July- Oct.
It is on the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhyundar or Lakshman Ganga .There is a big Gurudwara here.
Valley of Flower:
This ‘paradise of nature lovers sprawling over an area of 87.5 kms lies 6kms .from Bhyundar village and is 19kms trek from Govind Ghat.The valley rich in flora wealth was discovered by Flank Smythe in the 1930s. According to mythology , lord Hanuman visited the valley to collected ‘Sanjeevni’ herb to save the life of lakshman, the brother of lord Rama.The river Pushpawati flows through the verdant valley surrounded by mountains on all sides.with the melting of snow from May onward, the entire valley blooms with exotic flowers till September. There are over 521 species of flowering plants and the area was declared a National Park in 1982 , to preserve the bio diversity of the valley.
The winter home to Badrinath lies on the slopes above the confluence of Alaknanda and Dhauliganga .it is an important halt enroute to Badrinath and base for trekkers to the famous Valley of Flowers .
